There are people out there, dying. They have no food, no water, because it's all poisoned. They're all dying of the heat, malnutrition, and exhaustion. The looters aren't really so much the problem any more, because they're all dying now as well. They're trying to steal to survive, but they can't steal what's not there.

Even the people that got away are having troubles. There's no gas--they can only drive so far away in their cars before they need to buy more. But they have no money, and the gas stations have no fuel to give them even if they could pay for it. So these people are camping out, stranded on the freeways, hoping for something to come along.

But what really frosts my buttons is that even after all we did for the Tsunami Victims last winter, we are getting NO international support. Oh, no, wait---Venezuela gave us $1 million...that doesn't even count as a drop in the bucket. It barely counts as a GLANCE at the bucket. It's downright insulting...hold on a sec, wasn't it the Venezuelan president-or-other that Pat Buchanan suggested we assassinate just a week or so ago? *le sigh*

...I want to live on a different planet. I don't like this one anymore.

I was crying about it a few days ago. Now I am just bitter at how hated our country has become.. and quite possibly even rightly so.

I think Ill go cry again.

*hugs*

That's quite the accusation you make. Maybe you should take some time to think about it.

What you protest is that, because we do something nice, we should get something in return. But when has that EVER been true? The money we gave England, and France after WWII, was it ever returned? No. We gave our aid because we wanted to. I think what's wrong with this country is that we expect something in return after we do nice things. Sure, we helped out the tsunami victims, but can they give us money? No. What we need to start doing as a country is realize that, while bad things happen, we can't be like 5th grade children expecting something for every good deed we do. And as for the comment about Venezuela, every bit helps. Did you check to see Venezuela's finicial situation? They're not too hot themselves. More than that, did you check to see if they were sending other kinds of aid? Research! And don't listen to Pat Buchanan, he'll just fill your head with nonsense.

Actually, we've received offers of support from many different countries. Our government has just decided not to accept it.

complicated issue

K-puff, don't be discouraged. There is lots of good in the world. Before long, there will be multi-national aid, people helping people - binding the world together. Politics and distance can't prevent it. It just takes a bit longer when it has to come from private agencies and citizens rather than governments. International governmental relations are complicated and slow-moving. The many, many issues here will still be debated 100 years from now. What if Congress hadn't cut the 14 billion from the budget that were designated for maintenance of the New Orleans levees? Why were so many citizens unable to get out of the city? Why wasn't public transport arranged for them? How can we establish better emergency communication systems, and food and water distribution in a crisis? Why are the abandoned so predominantly African-American? How we, as a nation, debate these issues and try to solve them, will define the next several years, and certainly the next political cycle. My eyes have certainly been opened to an aspect of life in the South. It is very different from life where we live, but we are all members of the same country, and we all have a stake in each other's lives. I feel strongly that good will come of this, that we will learn valuable lessons, and the survivors of this disaster will teach us much.
