You guys. You know how some people just write certain kinds of fic? I mean, their natural writing style just lends really well to a specific genre or something?

I've been a one-shot person my whole life; not only did I lack the stick-to-it-iveness that multi-chapter fics require, but I simply didn't have any *ideas* for them. My brain was geared toward one-shots. I wouldn't have even guessed at how to start something that would take more than 3,000 words.

As I've gotten older, I've completely lost my penchant for writing long, gorgeous descriptions and flowery language (I think it's directly correlated with my decision to become an Economics major, where papers are to-the-point, no BS, just pure information). I still love *reading* those kinds of fics of course, especially when done well, but writing them is something I have to force out for pacing reasons. What I really love writing is dialogue, he-said-she-said, move plot, move! Now I feel like doing this, now I'm going to add this in there, oh it would be cool if THIS happened, and then Alice would totally be like, WTF MATE. And all of a sudden, all I want to do at work is go home and write. I'm cranking out about two chapters a week -- the only difference is, I'm not posting directly to [ profile] alittleoddish when I'm finished, so it seems like I've burnt out. But I'm still producing at the same rate!

I am having SO MUCH FUN. Multi-chaptered fics, you guys. It's my new thing. ...At least for the next few months. We'll see if I've burned out after that, HAH.
Krista Perry has not only updated, but finished her Ranma 1/2 fanfic "Hearts of Ice".

Stop whatever you're doing. Because this is a BIG. FUCKING. DEAL.

There are some fics that change the way you remember a series. They become your personal canon. They are usually long, EPIC TO THE EXTREME, and a huge emotional investment, and there's usually only one per series that can hold such a place in your heart. These are the fics that you check every day to see if the author has updated yet. Some examples that come to mind are:

Harry Potter: After the End

Inuyasha: although many would pick Niamh's Of Gods and Monsters, and Ookami's Turnabout is Fair Play is also amazing and well-known, my personal Epic!fic for IY is Rozefire's Dead Famous.

Doctor Who: [ profile] earlgreytea68's Chaos Theory in Vortex Orbits in Relative Dimensions in Time and Space

Labyrinth: K L Morgan's A Forfeit of Dreams

And, of course, for Ranma 1/2: Krista Perry's Hearts of Ice.

"Hearts of Ice" first gained notoriety back in 1997. I didn't discover it until a few years later, when I was 12 years old. There are no words to describe how brilliantly and poignantly written this fic is; it's truly a masterpiece. It made a huge impact on me, and how I looked at not just Ranma 1/2 fandom, but quality of internet fandom as a whole.

But the last two chapters were missing.

Krista Perry wrote up to a cliffhanger, two chapters away from the end, and then took a hiatus.

Ten years of cliffhanger, my friends! I checked the website occasionally for the first few months, but then moved on to other things. Forgot about it. Until just yesterday, when [ profile] _midoriko_sama_ posted on her Livejournal that SHE HAD UPDATED.

Writing this post is like trying to describe how Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows made you feel when you finally, finally held it in your hands, knowing that you were about to end a journey you started ten years ago, when you were a child... and began to read it for the first time. And indeed, I haven't gone on such a reading spree since "Deathly Hallows"; I came home from work, started from the beginning, and read for a FULL. TEN. HOURS.

It was... so beautiful. I can't believe it. There are no words.

I cried.
Okay. So. NaNoWriMo is coming up and just in the nick of time because OMG I FEEL LIKE WRITING AGAIN. XD I'm really excited for my novel, too -- I'm rewriting the Twilight Saga. So it doesn't suck. And the characters can actually be their snarky, wonderful, chemistry-having and logic-using selves that I KNOW THEY ARE DEEP INSIDE STEPHANIE MEYER WHY ARE YOU SO BLIND TO YOUR OWN CREATIONS

So. Today, I was completely inspired to write this piece, because while I was talking with one of my friends about our problems with Teh Saga, I said: "I would, for example, have had nine months of hilariously pregnant Bella than whatever the bloody hell, LITERALLY OMG, SM tried to pull. Except for the fact that, when you think about it, Vampire babies are impossible anyways."

To which her response was, "Well, even if she had realized Vampire Babies were impossible, she probably just would have done the whole thing as a dream sequence or something. The real dilemma is, I can't decide whether or not that would be worse than what she actually tried."

So, here you go. It's a wonderful piece of both satire and fluff in a combination that I'm very proud of. ^_^ I'm so, so excited to start NaNoveling.

Just a little 100-word drabble, because I got my wisdom teeth taken out yesterday so I can't do much but sit around the house, mucking around [ profile] 31_days, playing catch-up with the Memories because I am TRAGICALLY behind. T_T Anyways. (my mouth hurts.)

I feel bad for writing this at work, but we were majorly overstaffed today. Besides, I'm really, really proud of this one. It feels like it's coming straight out of the book.

I'm still experimenting, messing around with their characters a bit. I just had this little idea, though, for my [ profile] un_love_you prompt table. So I'm working on them a bit.

I wrote Twilight fic. Yes, I know. But Edward and Bella are so cute and easy to write together. Being themselves. Doing just stuff. I love it.

Title: In the Rain
Rating: completely, totally, entirely child-safe piece of fluff.
Characters: Bella and Edward. Being themselves.
Spoilers: None. Not set for any specific time in the series.

My claim for [ profile], yay kataang? ^^;;

Fandom: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Pairing: Aang/Katara
Theme set: Alpha; a few of them are out of order, but I took the numbers off so it shouldn't be distracting.
Rating: Completely G-rated---this set was written with their ages in mind, so for those who are squeamish about their age, this is perfectly safe!

I think my favorite is...Sex, because I can see that scene SO VIVIDLY in my mind. X3 A bunch of ones after that come as close seconds. Chocolate has such a great mental image, Name because I honestly used to think that was how 'Katara' was spelled, Gift I just really like, and Hair because I've always thought Katara was HAWT with her hair down. ^__^

Little Secret

Rukiji snored softly in his cradle. Ichigo stood, watching him sleep whilst shooting occasional withering glances at their new mobile; birds and fish made out of eventually chewable rubber circled ominously. He’d have to talk to Orihime about that.

He glanced behind before pulling something out of his pocket – an innocent-looking stick that was actually a miniature training sword, ordered from Urahara. He slipped it in the far back of a drawer beneath Rukiji’s cradle.

Task accomplished, he leaned over the side and kissed his son softly on his orange tuft of hair. "Shh…" he whispered. "It’s our little secret."

Industrial Lighting

The cold seemed to slap him in the face as he stepped out of his apartment. Ichigo jammed his hands even further into his pockets as he walked, breathing in the smells of exhaust, alcohol, and burnt rubber that seemed to saturate his neighborhood. Why did he ever choose to live here? He scowled at the noise from the traffic and turned on his radio-cassette player. Shaking his head, he swung around a corner, down a stairwell, and into the underground.

He flashed his card at the familiar guard and pushed his way through the mangled turnstiles (he was so familiar with this route that he didn’t even have to think before immediately going to the only one that didn’t stick). The air was a just as cold in here, but the smell only seemed to intensify. And everywhere, there were those infernal pigeons…dumb birds that were more street-smart and scruffier-looking than even some of the homeless men Ichigo saw on the street. It was a miserable little station.

Ichigo shifted slightly as his subway blew in. He stepped inside and stood at a nearby rail, smirking at the pair of tourists nearby. You could always tell the tourists—they were always the only ones to stumble when the train started up.

Maybe it was a lack of better things to do, but he continued to watch the pair even after they’d reattained their bearings. It was a pair of two girls, but definitely not sisters; best friends, Ichigo decided. The shorter one had spiky, black hair and stood like a martial artist would—feet apart, eyes scanning the area casually. The other girl had long, red hair that seemed to move of its own accord…and also, Ichigo noticed, an impressive rack, as she straightened up and met his gaze.

Caught and mildly embarrassed, Ichigo averted his eyes expertly to the side. It was a skill you picked up when you lived in this kind of city.

But the redhead didn’t seem to have learned it yet; she kept staring at him unabashedly from the edges of Ichigo’s vision.

"Hey there!" she chirped with a smile.

Ichigo’s eyes flickered in her direction. Yep. Definitely a tourist.

"Hey." he mumbled lazily.

The girl smiled and opened her mouth, but before she could say anything the train coasted to a stop. "Orihime," the black-haired girl said. "This is it."

The redhead (Orihime, Ichigo supposed) nodded at her friend and allowed her to take her arm. "Okay, Tatsuki." She shot Ichigo a cheery wave before stepping onto the cement landing. "Bye, stranger!" Then the doors closed with a disturbing kissing sound, and she was gone.

Ichigo smiled a little, and cranked up the volume before closing his eyes and leaning his head against the smooth metal pole. Funny, he thought. I’ve never seen anyone else’s hair glow under industrial subway lighting.

A Lot of Ways to Die

There are a lot of ways to die, Ichigo thought.

The room was filled with flowers from well-wishers and friends, but they did little to cover the smell of rubber that comes with every hospital. Giving them a small glance as he entered the room, he quietly sat in his stool with her hand in his, listening to her breathing. In, out, in, out, accompanied by the cold-sounding beeps and whirrs from the machine next to him.

Old or young, fast or slow, with family or without.

Her hair was splayed out on her pillow, dull and limp from the combination of exhaustion and harsh lighting. He remembered watching it shimmer and bounce in the sunlight, just a few weeks before she collapsed in the middle of painting their living room.

On accident or on purpose, nobly or in vain, in fear or in silence.

It wasn’t fair. Ichigo knew it wasn’t fair. Her heart just wanted to do more than what her body could give her. She was too good--something had to give, and now she was leaving him at the prime of their lives. It wasn’t just wasn’t right.

Awake or asleep, in pain or peaceful, with regrets or not.

The doctor gave him some papers. He stared at them until he signed the blurred line at the bottom and grasped her hand again. He averted his eyes and stared at the wall. This room had no windows. She would have hated that. She would have hated this room, this place. A hard, empty cage for a bird that was waiting to fly free.

There are a lot of ways to die, Ichigo thought.

He kissed Orihime’s hand and held it to his forehead. Some people just did it on the inside.

"How about this, Ichigo?" She tried a hat on that was shaped like a dinosaur.

He crossed his arms and stared out the store window. "No."

Orihime frowned slightly, but was not to be deterred. She replaced the dinosaur with juggling sticks.

A jack-in-the-box.

A gun that fired little pig figurines.

A doll with eyes that squirted out when it was squeezed.

A balloon doggy.

Plastic sushi. "Say ahh..." she told him.

"Oh, come on!"

By now, Orihime was getting frustrated. In a desperate attempt, she waved a rubber chicken viciously in his face (so close he could have kissed it), complete with an angry ‘buck-aw!’ noise.

At last, Ichigo smiled. "Now that," he said, "is funny."
